Most people do not understand the importance of porosity in soil. Plant roots respire and most plants require 20-25% air content after a heavy rainfall to be optimum. Low air content causes roots to decay which can cause root diseases like pythium, fusarium and a host of others. As well, beneficial micro organisms in the soil also require air. For optimum root health, avoid excessive compaction of the soil to avoid suffocating the roots.
